Fujitsu to sell 300mm fab to UMC: media reports

|

Fujitsu Ltd. is negotiating with United Microelectronics Corp. with a view to selling its 300mm wafer fab in Mie Prefecture to the Taiwanese company, and with Phoenix, Arizona-based, On Semiconductor on the proposed sale of its Aizu fab in Fukushima Prefecture, media reported. The contemplated disposals would signal virtually a complete withdrawal by Fujitsu from semiconductor fabrication.

Fujitsu commented that the reports are not based on any announcement it has made and that it doesn't intend to withdraw from semiconductor fabrication. However, Fujitsu has been seeking partners as one element of its ongoing restructuring.

Fujitsu and UMC reportedly intend to form a JV, with Fujitsu initially having a majority stake but eventually reducing that to a minority stake, in order to separate the fab operation from its consolidated business results.

Back in February 2013, Fujitsu announced its intention to form a JV with partners, including TSMC, for semiconductor fabrication at the Mie fab. But negotiations with TSMC appear to have been unfruitful.
